[SM-USERS] New User Pref File Error

Ryan Dagey
I recently (within last week) upgraded to 1.4.6 from 1.4.5 to fix the PHP
read_body issues, and recently I added a new user.  Everytime the user
tries to login the following error occurs:

ERROR
Preference file, /[username].pref.tmp, could not be opened. Contact your
system administrator to resolve this issue.
Go to the login page

Warning: Unknown: Your script possibly relies on a session side-effect
which existed until PHP 4.2.3. Please be advised that the session
extension does not consider global variables as a source of data, unless
register_globals is enabled. You can disable this functionality and this
warning by setting session.bug_compat_42 or session.bug_compat_warn to
off, respectively. in Unknown on line 0

My squirrelmail installation dir (owned by apache user and group) has the
following permissions:

I researched the problem and those who resolved in the past did so via
file permissions (which makes sense), but even 777 does not resolve this
problem.  I did some slight debugging to see why the pref file is being
created in / instead of /data, but I can't spend more time on the issue
right now.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to figure out the problem or where I
should be looking to allow squirrelmail sufficient privileges to overcome
this issue?

Specs:
- Gentoo
- Squirrelmail 1.4.6 [CVS]
- PHP 5.0.5-r4 [use flags = cli, force-cgi-redirect, apache2, crypt, curl,
ftp, gd, iconv, imap, jpeg, mysql, ncurses, nls, pcre, pear, png,
readline, session, soap, spell, ssl, truetype, xml2, xsl, zlib]
- Apache 2.0.55 [use flags = mpm-prefork, threads, ssl]
- courier-imap-4.0.1 [use flags = berkdb, gdbm, fam, nls]
- We have two squirrelmail installations in two different dirs for two
virtual hosts--the problem exists in both installations

Plugins:
    1. administrator
    2. change_password
    3. compatibility
    4. delete_move_next
    5. filters
    6. folder_sizes
    7. fortune
    8. proon
    9. quicksave
    10. saconf
    11. secure_login
    12. select_range
    13. sent_confirmation
    14. spamassassin
    15. squirrelspell
    16. virus_scan

Any help is appreciated.

disable third party plugins one by one and find plugin that caused this
error. Stock SquirrelMail plugins should not cause this php error message.

it looks like you mixed two squirrelmail versions.

Install squirrelmail 1.4.6cvs in other directory and try to reproduce your
problem without any third party plugins.
